How to Water Orchids Correctly

The orchid plant is typically found in tropical areas of the globe. These orchid areas usually receive a tremendous amount of rain making them very humid in their native habitats. As a matter of fact, the ideal humidity level for most orchid plants is 80%. What is ideal for the orchid though is not comfortable for human beings unfortunately. As a grower, you will need to find other strategies to keep your orchids healthy and happy. One technique to humidify your orchids is to provide them with a constant supply of water nearby. You can start by purchasing a deep saucer and some pebbles. Pour the pebbles in the saucer to a height about one to one-and-a-half inches (2.50 to 3.75 cm).
Then set your orchid pot on top of the pebbles and pour water onto the pebbles making sure that the water does not touch the orchid pot. Doing this will create a high-humidity climate around your orchids.
One common mistake that people make when caring for their orchids is over watering them. Many owners assume that when the potting bark is dry it is time for watering. This is true for other household plants, but not for orchids. Although the potting bark may feel dry, the bark actually holds moisture. The general rule of thumb is to water your orchid plant sparingly once every 10 or 14 days. The exact number of days you use depends on the potting bark. Let the bark completely dry between waterings. Orchids, in the their native habitat, have their roots dry out before being given water again. In addition, orchid s need to be fertilized sparingly. Garden shops have orchid fertilizer which is the kind you should apply to your plants. Formulating a regular routine for watering and feeding your orchid is an excellent way to guarantee that you should be able to enjoy these exotic plants for a long time.
